THE TUTU PROJECT

Bob Carey is a New York Photographer. He took his first photo of himself in a tutu for a project called Ballet Arizona. He thought it would be fun to take more photos in a tutu, so he did! Carey did not know the future of these photos, but soon tragedy would tell.

In 2003 Carey learned that his wife Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer which hit hard because his mom had passed away of breast cancer in 1989. Being an artist, as self therapy, Carey took more pictures in the tutu as his way to escape the everyday hardship cancer brings. His wife showed the images while she was in the hospital receiving treatment and it made patients giggle and smile with laughter. At that moment Carey knew the purpose of the pictures. His goal was to create a book and donate one to every cancer  center in the country. And that’s how The Tutu Project was born.

According to Carey “The mission of The Tutu Project is to support the fund raising efforts of  The Carey Foundation for women with breast cancer. We strive to bring laughter and understanding to a community that has endured far too much.”

The Carey Foundation offers assistance with cancer-related costs like transportation to treatment, home care, childcare and medical supplies.
